Professor of Technology Governance and Development Strategies Dr. Erik S. Reinert holds from January to March the Tun Ismail Mohamad Ali Chair in the Faculty of Economics and Management at National University of Malaysia.
“Malaysia is an interesting example of very successful development policy over a very brief period, so there is much to learn,” commented the TUT visiting professor on his current appointment. The Chair is named after Tun Ismail Ali (1918-1998), the first Malay governor of the Central Bank of Malaysia and is funded by the National Investment Fund.
Reinert’s activities as holder of the Chair have so far included giving talks on topics such as “National Strategy in the History of Economic Thought” and "Financial Crisis in Europe and the USA." In the latter he concludes that the solution for the crisis would be to “stop bailing out the irresponsible financial institutions“, but „unfortunately this idea is not popular though slowly gaining acceptance."
National University of Malaysia, located near Kuala Lumpur and founded in 1970, offers almost 300 undergraduate and postgraduate programmes for more than 22 000 students and has been chosen as one of the four national research universities. In 2006, it was ranked by The Times Higher Education Supplement (THES) at number 185 in its annual ranking of the world's top 200 universities.
